Raising the Bar

University at Buffalo - iSciWNY

isciwnyEmployee and employer “matchmaking” is often difficult and the University at Buffalo is working to ease this process, particularly from a student/employee perspective by developing a website tailored to the life sciences industry and workforce in Western New York. The site, isciwny.com, which is unique to New York and the U.S., acts as a gateway and a one-stop location for an introduction to bioscience career pathways, types of life science companies, regional education and training opportunities and jobs across the region that includes Buffalo and Rochester.

The iSciWNY site brings together a key set of practical specifics for individuals interested in a career in the life sciences. Its career pathways feature summarizes information for each occupation or career path including expected pay, education requirements, daily tasks and activities, regional companies you could work for, where you can train or attend school locally to qualify and links regarding how you can learn more. The featured career paths with a life sciences focus include:

  • Lab sciences;
  • Life sciences manufacturing;
  • Information technology;
  • Support;
  • Quality control;
  • Engineering; and
  • Business.

To facilitate job connections, iSciWNY provides links to a range of regional job posting sites and has a referral partner, Superior Group, a staffing, placement, and executive recruitment firm. Likewise, the SUNY Buffalo workforce development team works directly with existing and potential new companies to place interns or fill permanent hiring needs. Other states and regions have taken notice and are reaching out to the University to understand how they too might deliver such a useful industry- and region-specific resource.
