Raising the Bar
NYS Science + Technology Law Center at Syracuse University College of Law
Syracuse University (SU) is home to the New York State Science and Technology Law Center (NYS STLC), a leader in legal training and consulting with a specific focus on technology commercialization and facilitating innovation and the innovation ecosystem in New York. The Center, which grew out of the first-of-its-kind Technology Commercialization Law Program at SU, was stood up and funded by NYS Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology, and Innovation (NYSTAR.)
The Center works primarily with newer, smaller companies that need the most assistance and guidance with legal issues (though the Center does not give “formal” legal advice) around emerging technologies. It helps companies identify ways to protect their technology, assess its optimal paths to market and understand legal and regulatory hurdles for product development. The Center’s engagements with companies offer exciting experiential learning opportunities for law and business students and enables students to graduate with real consulting and research experience, further enhancing the employability of these grads. Since 1993, over 300 students graduated from the Technology Commercialization Law Program and are working at law firms, corporations, government, universities and start-up companies across the U.S.
